jump to repliesAll Neocities sites are down because Namecheap locked the domain without warning... and with that, taken down a huge part of the indieweb.
Don't use Namecheap, and if you do it's easy to move.
Namecheap's customer service is awful and they are much more expensive than alternatives. Now is the time to leave. or later maybe after you've had a snack is fine, too.
The servers are still up and accessible, it's just the DNS is down.
If you either control your DNS or know how to add a local rule you can map *.neocities.org to 23.143.32.2 and things seem to work.

back to top@gintoxicating also 2620:2:6000::bad:dab:cafe for IPv6
@gintoxicating idk why i suddenly thought of this but it would be cool if there was a community of shared hostfiles that people could opt into to have their favorite indie stuffs be available even without DNS
@gintoxicating@transister.social how might one move away from namecheap?
@gintoxicating@transister.social
I own three domains on Namecheap, only one of which is currently in use. The three domains are up for renewal in 2030, 2034, and 2035. Does it make any sense for me to try to move now?
@gintoxicating What the whole hell... ?
@gintoxicating any write-ups on their end documenting this? Could be cached in my DNS, but everything seems to work for me.
@gintoxicating Shit I was planning on making a site on neocities but not anymore unless they stop using such a shitty registar.
@Draconic_NEO @gintoxicating they want to move after this and gladly they are back :3
@fennek
That's great. Hopefully they'll manage to get their domain back soon.

We were thinking about moving our site back to neocities; thank gods we didn't!

@gintoxicating@transister.social i have some domains on namecheap for literally a decade or more. i was planning on moving to porkbun but they wanted me to upload ID after creating an account
@arctic@labyrinth.zone @gintoxicating@transister.social thanks for the tip! i would prefer to avoid cloudflare, but i'd like to give up my ID even less
i was wondering if this is a porkbun specific requirement or one that other registrars are implementing as well
@gintoxicating namecheap is not only more expensive, but also has very shady plans advertising "unlimited" storage if i remember correctly. they also consistently ignore the scammers using their services, they're notorious for hosting scam domains.
i'm currently on porkbun, but i'm trying to move away from U.S. tech. do you (or anyone here) have suggestions for EU based registrars that have sane pricing and WHOIS privacy?
@toufy @gintoxicating I recommend @beasts .
@pertho @gintoxicating @beasts
bookmarked!
that looks like exactly what i'm looking for.
privately owned, EU hosted, no reliance on cloudflare, and a firm anti-AI stance.
will likely transfer there soon. thank you.
@gintoxicating what in the what? Did the vendor provide any justification for the action against a paid customer? Is there any ETA for a fix?
Not trying to grate your nerves - wanting to see what next steps are to help restore your awesome service (tyvm for neocities!) ✌️💙

I’m with namecheap currently, who should I move to and how do I do it?
@gintoxicating End The Domain Name System Today #fuckdns
@gintoxicating why the instant call to boycott before further info is available?
@claus @gintoxicating further info is available for a few hours now: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:nixiyrvdswjb7mhdolxqkf2a/post/3mnkqgxostk2k
@gintoxicating i use https://gandi.net (hopefully they're not evil yet)
@zodiepupper Recently moved away from gandi because they were bought out, are absurdly expensive, and kinda are moving toward evil.
I'm on Porkbun now. Unfortunately, they're American, so if that's a concern... yeah. But they cut my cost to less than half gandi.
@gintoxicating I moved to them from Hover to save money. Who’s cheaper and better?
