you can now get a new gmail username for your existing gmail account !!!

you keep all your data and your old username as an alias in the same account (ie, you are still contactable at your old email)

(since they announced this on tdov πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ and this is something a lot of trans folks can benefit from, it would have been nice to give a hat tip to us but google is not a trans friendly corpo lol)

fun fact : they reached out to the trans employee group for pre launch testing of this (like over a year ago i think) so i’ve had two addresses for my account for a while.

important note: since you keep and cannot remove your old username it can be a bad fit if you want to keep your google identities distinct and have no chance of them being connected by a third party without your consent/knowledge. there is probably a possibility that the connection between accounts leaks through things like calendar invites / docs sharing / other shit. and if you have shared things in the past and people look at them, they will see your new username i think

(that said if you thought you were a luna and ended up a amelia that might be nbd)

other than that, its fine and works pretty nice, but some third party shit like sso and api integrations will break if they key on your username instead of the immutable user id for your account. this is common
