Got hung up on by a doctors office for asking not to be called “sir” then asking again when called “sir” a fourth time.
“I wanted to check if the lab is open”
“The listed hours are X sir”
“Oh but I’ve been there before and they have been closed so I wanted to confirm, and please do not call me sir thanks”
“I just told you the hours sir”
“… also I asked you to please not call me sir”
“THEN WHAT SHOULD I CALL YOU ”
“Well PATIENT I told you …”
“That’s a pretty good choice tbh, anyway like I was saying…” <aaaannndd I’ve been hung up on>
holy shit lady fuck off and die so I can watch
Ok instead of ignoring what happened I summoned my old White Male privilege and called back to eventually speak with a supervisor. He told me:
he had heard this conversation while it was happening and had already pulled the record to get full context and have a discussion with the rep
mentioned he was glad I called back so he could apologize and make it clear her response wasn’t appropriate or my fault, I was asking an entirely reasonable question
a bit of empathetic chit chat about how horrible and unrewarding doing customer support is and I kinda understand especially if she’d just had a string of shitty calls or something
mentioned I was surprised she hung up when I sincerely complimented her on figuring out a gender neutral option for referring to me, because I thought it was progress 😶
