Some server admins have an even bigger god complex than the PHP bulletin boards of yesteryear, which I didn't even think possible.
My guess is, it's because their power is fairly impotent (ppl will just leave and get to keep all/most connections). Gotta double down and abuse the little power they have while they still have it. It's literally the exact same thing Musk is doing on Twitter, with the exact same "logic" behind it.
Reminds me of the hall monitors at my kid's elementary school, except children usually know they're being little shits.
