they work in the exact opposite way of how a list currently works in mastodon/most fedi software. instead of controlling what I see, it controls what subset of my followers sees my post.

here’s how i imagine it for me picking some random stuff:

• one line jokes
• bad puns
• transgender rage
• verbose nonsense 🔓
• linux 🔓
• selfies 🔒
• personal angst 🔒

a default follow pre-selects the first three lists. the unlocked lists aren’t default selections but, like an unlocked account don’t require approval to join. the locked lists you can request and require approval

when I post, i pick one or more categories for the post. people on that list, see the post.

ideally different lists could be rendered or decorated differently when shown

(could this be useful for plural folks? especially if you can make posts to the different “lists” look notably different to the reader)
